Florida gives everyone something to do and see, and Jacksonville stands out as a prime example. It's the largest city in area in the continental United States and it's the most populated Florida city with about 850,000 residents. Jax, as its residents affectionately refer to it, offers museums, beaches, plantations and hiking in wilderness areas. This city has it all. While you're zipping between fun, you can avoid the driving stress with a charter bus that chauffeurs you from the shore to the museums to the Riverside Arts Market.
Delve into the magic of science and natural history at the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History. Must see exhibits include the "Atlantic Tails: Whales, Dolphins and Manatees of Northeast Florida" with its Intertidal Touch Tank that gives you the feeling of being underwater with the fishes, "The Body Within" that lets you walk through a mouth into the digestive tract and out... well, you can guess. Check out the live animals in its Naturalist Center and don't skip the energy exhibit or your chance to time travel back 12,000 years to see the pre-historic Jacksonville area. When you're done, take break at the nearby Friendship Fountain, a local landmark that's a perfect picnic setting.
Perhaps you're a connoisseur of art. Enjoy a day at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. The permanent collection alone has about 5,000 objects with world-class art ranging from 2100 B.C. through the 21st century. It houses the Wark Collection of Early Meissen Porcelain. Walk the museum's garden - 2.5 acres of early 20th century garden design integrating fountains and arbors, reflecting pools with antique ornaments and sculptures with southern oaks and indigenous plants. Laze under the Cummer Oak, one of the oldest trees in the city. Its canopy of more than 150 feet provides plenty of shade.
Take a trip back in time exploring Kingsley Plantation. Its main house, erected in 1798, remains open for tours. You can also visit the slaves quarters and barns. Once a working farm of more than 1,000 acres, it was returned to forest in the 1900s. The plantation offers self-guided tours and guided tours of the home.
Shop, eat and explore at the Riverside Arts Market, open Saturdays ten months of the year. RAM hosts about 7,500 visitors each weekend under the Fuller Warren Bridge. Local artists, artisans, chefs, food vendors and farmers sell their wares with the St. Johns River as a scenic backdrop.
Hit the beach at both Little Talbot Island State Park and Big Talbot Island State Park. Little Talbot offers five miles of white sand beach on one of the few remaining undeveloped Florida barrier islands. Here you can camp, hike, surf, kayak, swim and boat. Big Talbot hosts a nature preserve perfect for bird watching and photography. Go for a hike to explore the marshes and Boneyard Beach.
Make Bold City Brewery your first food stop. Enjoy a Saturday tour of the micro-brewery and a beer tasting. Everyday you can tip a pint and catch a quick meal with friends right along side the city's residents, who name this spot as a favorite. Tour the Budweiser plant, sample the beer and, if you're lucky, you'll get to meet the Clydesdales. Depending on the day, you can catch a movie or a live music show at The Florida Theater, a historic movie theater in the ornate old Hollywood style.
